Additional Support & Resources

There are many additional resources that parents can consult when seeking support and additional guidance. Included here is information that may be helpful.

Parent Portal

Parents and guardians have access to an online tool to monitor their children’s progress in school. The portal provides access to grades, attendance records, student assignments, missing assignments, notes from the child’s teacher about assignments, standardized test scores as well as historic academic and enrollment data. Student Portal

Students have access to a collection of division-supported digital resources by logging in to the school division’s student portal. These resources include but are not limited to online versions of approved textbooks, library resources, and the school’s intranet site. Parents may also access Student Portal and available digital resources from home by using their child’s login credentials. Learn More

Academic and/or Behavioral Support

If your child is struggling in school or if you feel your child needs additional support to address academic or behavior-related issues, reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor for additional suggestions for supporting your child at home or for services that are available at the school to address your child’s identified areas of need. Parents whose children receive services under an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 plan should contact their child’s case manager to address any questions or concerns about their child’s academic and/or behavioral progress.

School Counseling Services

Each elementary school offers a comprehensive counseling program that is an integral part of the total educational program designed to promote the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. Licensed counselors provide a variety of services, including classroom instruction, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, consultation with parents, teachers and administrators, and coordination of services with outside agencies. Special Education

Special education is specially designed instruction to meet the needs of a student with a disability as described in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) and the Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia. Through a process of identification, evaluation and eligibility determination, students determined to require special education and related services are provided instruction as indicated in the student’s individualized education program (IEP). The IEP is developed through a collaborative process between parents, teachers, administrators, other service providers and students, when appropriate, and is designed to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE). An IEP is implemented once written parental consent is obtained. For further information about special education, the process and/or delivery of services, please contact the Parent Support and Information Center at 263-2066. Learn More

Gifted Education

Gifted students at the elementary level may choose to apply to the full-time gifted elementary program at Old Donation School or to remain in their neighborhood school and receive services through the resource cluster program. In the resource cluster program, identified gifted students are placed in heterogeneous classrooms, in groups of six to eight, and are taught by a cluster teacher trained in gifted education at their neighborhood school. The gifted resource teacher in each school works collaboratively with each cluster teacher to differentiate curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of gifted learners. Gifted students who choose to remain in their home school may also choose to apply to participate in a pull-out program for dance and/or visual arts at the Old Donation School. English Language Learners

The third-grade English as a Second Language (ESL) program supports grade-level science Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). Instruction is designed to meet the needs of students at various levels of English proficiency. Language and culture taught in the ESL program reinforce skills and concepts taught in all areas of the standard curriculum.
