If your child is struggling in school or if you feel your child needs additional support to address academic or behavior-related issues, reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor for additional suggestions for supporting your child at home or for services that are available at the school to address your child’s identified areas of need. Parents whose children receive services under an individualized education program (IEP) or 504 plan should contact their child’s case manager to address any questions or concerns about their child’s academic and/or behavioral progress.

Special education is specially designed instruction to meet the needs of a student with a disability as described in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) and the Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia. Through a process of identification, evaluation and eligibility determination, students determined to require special education and related services are provided instruction as indicated in the student’s individualized education program (IEP). The IEP is developed through a collaborative process between parents, teachers, administrators, other service providers and students, when appropriate, and is designed to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE). An IEP is implemented once written parental consent is obtained. For further information about special education, the process and/or delivery of services, please contact the Parent Support and Information Center at 263-2066. Learn More
Gifted students at the middle school level may choose to apply to the full-time gifted school at Old Donation School or to remain in their neighborhood school and receive services through the resource cluster program. In the resource cluster program, identified gifted students are placed in heterogeneous classrooms and are taught by a cluster teacher trained in gifted education at their neighborhood school. The gifted resource teacher in each school works collaboratively with each cluster teacher to differentiate curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of gifted learners.
