Description: Virginia Beach City Public Schools is delighted to introduce the new Reading Bus to our community. The Reading Bus is an exciting and safe place for children, ages 2 – 5 years and their parents to participate in a wide selection of interactive reading activities. The Reading Bus is stocked with hundreds of volumes of books and fun activities. Its main purpose is to promote reading readiness to preschool children ages 2 – 5 years as it travels to various Virginia Beach communities. Parents board the bus and take part in Reading Bus activities.

Event Details: Series Storytimes for children age 6 months through age 5. These storytimes are a series and run for 10 weeks. Registration is required but walk-ins are welcome depending on space availability. Storytimes include:

Rhyme Time - 6 to 12 months

Onesies Rhyme Time - 12 to 24 months

Just 2s - 24 to 36 months

3s Please - 36 to 48 months

Combined Preschool Storytime - 3 to 5 years

On My Own Storytime - 4 to 5 years

Event Details: Join Ellen Notbohm, author and parent, as she presents information that

will equip parents and professionals with a unique understanding of autism

and how this complex disorder falls into four fundamental areas: sensory

processing challenges, speech/language delays and impairments, the elusive

social interaction skills and whole child/self-esteem issues. Participants will

learn how understanding these areas impact the child’s ability to become

productive, independent adults.

Event Details: Hear from Sandra Rief, author of How to Reach & Teach Children with ADD/

ADHD and several other books on helping children with ADHD and learning disabilities

succeed in school. Sandra will share practical strategies for dealing with

the struggle of homework and building organization, time management, and

other important skills. Learn effective behavioral strategies and communication

techniques, and how to work collaboratively with the school. This program will

provide many tips, tools, and resources to help you in supporting your child and

managing the challenges of ADHD at home and school.

Event Details: Sandra Rief, well known author and speaker, will share with educators and other professionals a host of practical strategies and best practices for reaching and

teaching children with ADHD. Topics addressed will include proactive strategies for preventing/minimizing behavioral problems in the classroom and other settings, techniques and interventions for dealing with challenging behaviors, instructional strategies for engaging student attention, and some key executive function and academic supports/accommodations.
