More than 5,000 fifth-graders to take part in NAS Oceana Air Show STEM Lab Day

Every fifth-grader enrolled in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will have the opportunity to take a one-of-kind field trip to Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Friday, Sept. 9. NAS Oceana, in partnership with the school division and several community partners, is hosting a special Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Lab Day, which will take place as part of the annual Air Show. This event is being provided free of cost for all students.

“In Virginia Beach, we are fortunate to have a strong military presence in our city and, consequently, invaluable community partnerships through our bases and military personnel,” said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. “Our STEM Lab Day is the perfect example of what is possible when the worlds of education, business and military service come together to highlight for children the limitless opportunities available to them.”

During their day on the military installation, every child will take part in hands-on activities and learn about STEM careers in a real-world setting. This will include displays and exhibits from NASA Langley, the Office of Naval Research and Naval Research Laboratory, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, U.S. Fleet Forces Command's Environmental Stewards of the Sea program and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Midlant Environmental.

Students will also meet and hear from U.S. Navy pilots, mechanics and support personnel to understand how STEM is part of their work as well as get up close views and tours of NAS Oceana aircraft. Additionally, students will see a special performance by the Navy’s elite flight demonstration team, The Blue Angels.

This field trip will be the first time an entire grade level has participated in a field trip together during the first week of school. For more specific information, contact the VBCPS Department of School Leadership at 263-1088.
