For the second year in a row, more than 5,500 Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) fifth-graders will head to Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana for a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Lab Learning Day.

On Friday, Sept. 15, students will head to Oceana and take part in a series of hands-on learning stations, meet STEM leaders throughout the military and Hampton Roads community and see a special performance by the Navy’s elite flight demonstration team, The Blue Angels.

A field trip like none other, this will be just the second time in division history an entire grade level has participated in a school activity.

“Last year, the STEM Lab Learning Day was an incredible experience for everyone involved - our partners, teachers, chaperones, and, most importantly, our students,” said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. “I cannot wait for our fifth-graders this year to take part in this fantastic opportunity and for them to walk away with that greater understanding and appreciation of all that is possible through STEM education.”

As part of the STEM Lab Learning Day, students will get to meet and hear from U.S. Navy pilots, mechanics and support personnel to understand how STEM is part of their work as well as get tours of NAS Oceana aircraft.

This event is made possible through a combined partnership between VBCPS, NAS Oceana and a host of community partners. These partners include NASA Langley, the Navy Seabees, Tidewater Community College, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Virginian Wesleyan University, Dominion Energy, Mad Science of Hampton Roads and Old Dominion University.
