VBCPS receives $4 million DoD grant for
NMSI College Readiness Program

In a special ceremony today at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) was presented a $4 million Department of Defense grant to implement the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) College Readiness Program in five more VBCPS high schools: Cox, Kempsville, Landstown, Ocean Lakes and Princess Anne.

Through a combination of student, teacher and school supports, the NMSI College Readiness Program aims to increase the number of students taking and exceling in college-level math, science and English classes, with an emphasis on traditionally underrepresented students. Content-specific professional learning for teachers and Advanced Placement exam subsidies and study sessions for students are among the supports. VBCPS previously received three-year NMSI grants to implement the program at Green Run and Salem high schools in 2011, and at Bayside, Kellam and Tallwood high schools in 2012.

“We know our students benefit from rigorous coursework and high expectations that challenge them to reach their full potential, and we are grateful for the support from our military and community partners to help us increase students’ access to and achievement in Advanced Placement courses,” said VBCPS Superintendent Aaron Spence. “We look forward to expanding this STEM-education initiative to five additional high schools and seeing our students and teachers succeed as they have at those schools already benefiting from the NMSI College Readiness Program.”

NMSI, launched in 2007, has been formally serving schools educating the children of uniformed active-duty military personnel since 2010. There are approximately 2,066 military dependents among the 9,500 students enrolled at the five high schools the 2017 grant will support.
