VBCPS receives 2017 Learning Counsel Digital Curriculum Strategy Award

Virginia Beach City Public Schools was among the 10 school districts and one school honored with the 2017 Learning Counsel Digital Curriculum Strategy Award. According to a Learning Counsel article about the award, recipients “were recognized for their work to not only transform the way they teach but for their management-level restructuring for digital delivery.”

The same article detailed why the Learning Counsel selected VBCPS as an honoree. Specifically, it noted that the division creates “unique paths” for students as part of the work under Compass to 2020, VBCPS’ five-year strategic framework.

“This plan (Compass to 2020) includes developing multiple pathways for all students and a program of personalized learning using appropriate digital resources and tools,” the article read, “To this end, the Department of Teaching and Learning developed a readiness guide for schools to self-assess themselves in the dispositions of students, teachers, leadership, community, and learning environment. To support these efforts the division has moved towards utilizing digital resources and tools whenever possible as well as moving towards a 1:1 adoption of Chromebooks in grades 1-12.”

“We are committed to transforming and personalizing learning for our students and providing learning opportunities guided by their personal goals, strengths, interests and needs,” said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. “Leveraging technology, digital resources and devices to enhance our curriculum, support instructional delivery and monitor student progress supports those efforts. We appreciate the Learning Counsel’s recognition of our strategic approach to continuously improving teaching and learning in Virginia Beach.”

Bill Johnsen, VBCPS director of instructional technology, accepted the Learning Counsel award on behalf of the division at the Learning Counsel’s Annual Gathering and National Awards event in November.
