VBCPS shifting semester, using Presidents' Day to makeup time lost to Hurricane Michael

Following the school closure Friday, Oct. 12 due to power outages and flooding from Hurricane Michael, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence has determined school will be in session, Monday, Feb. 18 (Presidents' Day) as a makeup day.

Including the Oct. 12 closure, VBCPS students will have already missed five days of school in the first semester from both Hurricane Florence and Michael. As such, the division will adjust the school calendar so the first semester ends Thursday, Jan. 31. This change will also require a rescheduling of the division's staff day/student Virtual Learning Day from Monday Jan. 28 to Friday, Feb. 1.

As a reminder, Virtual Learning Days were announced this year as a way for the school division to bank time in the school calendar, but also grow students' capacity for independent learning while utilizing online resources. The division's first Virtual Learning Day was held Monday, Oct. 8 and the second is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 6.

An updated calendar can be found on vbschools.com.
