Dr. Aaron Spence honored with 2019 Excellence in Educational Leadership Award

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Superintendent Aaron Spence has been named a 2019 recipient of the University Council for Educational Administration's (UCEA) Excellence in Educational Leadership Award. The award recognizes practicing school administrators nationwide for their extraordinary commitment and support for the improved preparation of school leadership.

Spence was nominated for the award by the faculty of the University of Virginia (UVA), where he received a bachelor's degree in French studies, a master's degree in secondary education and a doctorate in educational administration and supervision.

"I am honored and humbled to receive this award," Spence said. "This recognition wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of our students, teachers, staff and community partners who are at the heart of our division's continued success."

UCEA, which includes more than 100 member universities from around the nation, promotes the preparation and training of educational leaders for the benefit of schools and children.

"His outreach to the community is contagious as he inspires a belief in student growth with partnerships among community, faith-based, business and military organizations," said Dr. David Spicer, an associate professor at UVA’s Curry School of Education. "We are delighted to celebrate his substantial accomplishments and we are eager to support the many future contributions to educational excellence that Dr. Spence's career will no doubt entail."

Spence serves on the UVA K12 Advisory Council, which provides feedback, recommendations and support for continuing professional development of the K12 education community. He has facilitated dialogues focused on leading a diverse population of student learners, with an emphasis on special education.

UCEA will recognize Spence at their National Convention in November.
