During the Tuesday, May 28, school board meeting, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach approved full-day kindergarten (FDK) beginning in the 2019-20 school year.

All but three Virginia Beach elementary schools will have FDK this fall. John B. Dey, Hermitage and Thoroughgood, which will continue to be impacted by construction next school year, are scheduled to add FDK for the 2020 school year.

"The mission of VBCPS is to empower every student to become a life-long learner who is a responsible, productive and engaged citizen within the global community. This begins with the youngest learners," said Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "Full-day kindergarten is a game changer for these kids and I am beyond excited that my administration, working with this School Board and community, have to been able to provide this opportunity for them, for their parents and for our schools. This will continue to strengthen what is already an amazing school division!"

This ends the multiyear implementation plan VBCPS began in 2017 to transition all its elementary schools from half-day to full-day kindergarten models ahead of schedule.

Parents of rising kindergarteners should expect to receive communication from school principals in the coming weeks about the program, school hours and student schedules.
