Princess Anne High School crowned JROTC academic bowl national champions

In only their second year competing, cadets from Princess Anne High School (PAHS) won the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Junior Leadership Academic Bowl (JLAB) held June 21-25 in Washington D.C. This event was the academic bowl championship for all JRTOC military units.

Beginning last September, more than 2,000 schools from across the United States competed through two rounds of online tests consisting of questions about JROTC curriculum as well as English, math, science and current events. Top teams from each JROTC military branch then advanced to the JLAB championship to compete in live academic quiz bowls. PAHS was amongst the top eight teams representing the Navy JROTC (NJROTC). From the 64 teams competing, PAHS made it to the final round emerging as the champion over the team that had won the past three consecutive years.

"Our cadets worked countless hours over the past nine months," stated retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Dennis Gaitens. "It took serious dedication to studying subject material as well as believing in yourself and your team, which is what is taught in JROTC."

Cadets representing the PAHS NJROTC winning national team were Scott Durkin, Hayden Bowles, Logan Wimmer and Michael Johnson.

Established in 1964 and offered at accredited secondary schools across the nation, NJROTC's mission is to instill in students the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and sense of accomplishment.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools offers NJROTC programs and naval science as an elective course at First Colonial High School, Green Run High School, Landstown High School, Princess Anne High School and Salem High School.
