School Board extends contract of Superintendent Aaron Spence |
During its July 9 meeting, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach voted to extend the contract of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Superintendent Dr. Aaron C. Spence through June 30, 2023. "As we head into the new school year, the Board is pleased to be able to ensure our collaboration with this superintendent extends well into the future," said Board Chair Beverly Anderson. "Dr. Spence has dedication, passion and a tireless desire to provide every student with the tools they require to be a lifelong learner and to succeed in whatever career path they choose." Spence has led the division to full SOL accreditation for the last two years, supported a digital 1:1 learning environment and a culture of growth that focuses on preparing students for college, the military or employment right after graduation. VBCPS recently received 15 Exemplar Performance School Awards, the most of any Hampton Roads city, from the state Board of Education for exceeding state accreditation standards, narrowing achievement gaps and improving outcomes for students. "It is both humbling and energizing to be asked to continue what this team started in 2014: building classrooms that practice transformational learning, creating an environment where the social and emotional needs of our students are addressed and respected, and ultimately making Virginia Beach City Public Schools the best in the Commonwealth and the nation," said Spence. "I look forward to working alongside our school board members as we stay the course and maintain our forward momentum." Spence is recognized regionally and nationally as a leader in K-12 education. He is the 2019 recipient of the University Council for Educational Administration's Excellence in Educational Leadership Award, honoring his sustained commitment and support for the improved preparation of school leadership. The Virginia Association of School Superintendents selected Spence as the 2018 Virginia Superintendent of the Year. As superintendent, he is responsible for the instructional leadership and administrative operation of 86 schools and centers serving more than 67,000 students. |
