Virginia Beach City Public Schools honored for budget information for 19th straight year

The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International awarded Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) its Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for excellence in preparing the division's 2018-2019 budget document. This is the 19th consecutive year the division has received the award which, according to the organization, recognizes the best budget presentation practices in school districts.

"Along with preparing our students to be productive world citizens, we prioritize fiscal responsibility and transparency," said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "It's gratifying to be recognized year after year for our commitment to this stewardship of taxpayer funds."

ASBO International Executive Director David Lewis stated that the honorees' budget documents are "accurate, easy to read and communicate the district's goals and objectives," adding that the community "needs to be able to easily find and understand important district financial information."

A team of financial professionals reviews each division's budget documents which, among other criteria, must include a comprehensive financial picture in narrative, numeric and graphic form; describe the budget process and timeline; note any significant changes from the current year and underlying causes; summarize revenues and expenses for all funds; include a budget forecast; and describe sustaining local revenue sources.

This award, presented for the division's budget documents ending fiscal year 2018-2019, is one of many recognitions VBCPS has received for financial transparency.
