Ocean Lakes High School students
achieve perfect score on ACT

Five Ocean Lakes High School (OLHS) students-Alexander Cigularov, Pierce Corson, Ryoma Harris, Jondre Macaraeg and Alan Mach-earned the highest possible composite score of 36 on the ACT college admissions test. According to ACT, on average, less than half of 1% of the nation's test takers earn this top score.

The ACT, which is the leading college readiness assessment accepted by four-year colleges and universities in the United States, tests students in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each section is scored on a scale from 1-36, and a student's composite score is the average of those four scores.

All five students are enrolled in the school's Mathematics and Science Academy, are involved in numerous OLHS clubs and are currently applying to numerous colleges and universities. Four of them are seniors while Mach is a junior.

Cigularov, who hopes to pursue a career in medicine, has played soccer all four years and now is team captain. He is a member of the school's Operation Smile Club; president of the Marine Science Club as well as the Ping Pong Club; and vice president of the school's Red Cross Club. In addition, he is a member of English Honor Society, Science Honor Society, National Honor Society and the school's math honor society, Mu Alpha Theta.

Corson is interested in international relations. He is president of the biology club, captain of the varsity volleyball team and a member of Spanish and National Honors societies. Corson is also applying for the U.S. State Department's National Security Language Initiative for Youth, a program that provides merit-based scholarships to youth to spend a summer or academy year studying a foreign language in another country.

Harris plans to study mathematics and eventually pursue a degree in either computer science or artificial intelligence. At OLHS, he is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the math honors society, and the school's Latin Honors Society.

Macaraeg plans to pursue a career in medicine. He is involved in Latin Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta math honors society and National Honor Society. He also serves as president of both Operation Smile Club and Cubing Club, which brings together students who participate in local Rubik's Cube competitions.

Mach would like to become a doctor. In addition to being involved in several science clubs, he, too, is in Mu Alpha Theta and Latin Honors Society where he serves as an officer.

Since 2015 at least six OLHS students and another from Princess Anne High School have achieved top scores on the ACT or SAT college admissions tests.
