Virginia Beach school earns national
distinguished school award

Rosemont Elementary School has been named a 2019-2020 National ESEA Distinguished School. Two schools from every state receive the award, which is presented by the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators. Rosemont is being acknowledged for demonstrating exceptional student performance for two consecutive years.

"Under Principal Cari Hall's leadership, Rosemont Elementary School's educators are tireless in their efforts to serve not only the hearts and minds of their students, but also those of their families and the entire community," said Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. "This recognition is validation of their dedication to the children of Virginia Beach."

ESEA is an acronym for the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This award recognizes schools that are examples of superior, federally-funded school programs. These schools demonstrate a wide array of strengths, including team approaches to teaching and learning, focused professional development opportunities for staff, individualized programs for student success and strong partnerships between the school, parents and community, according to the organization.

During 2018-2019, 93% of Rosemont's students either passed or demonstrated academic growth on state assessments in English, and 97% either passed or improved on state tests in mathematics. More than 65% of the school's students are economically disadvantaged, according to the Virginia Department of Education. For three consecutive years, Rosemont, along with 100% of the division's other testing sites, has earned state accreditation.

Rosemont will be recognized with other nationwide honorees at the National ESEA Conference, Feb. 4-7, in Atlanta, Georgia.
