State school board association
features VBCPS programs

The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has released its 24th annual VSBA Showcases for Success directory, highlighting successful K-12 programs in Virginia's public schools. Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is one of 44 school divisions from across the Commonwealth that has programs featured in the directory.

They include:

African American Male Summit
This annual event provides sixth to 12th grade male students with the resources, support, inspiration and encouragement they need to be successful. Attendees participate in relationship-building exercises and learn about student leadership, community involvement as well as maintaining physical and mental well-being. The young men are then asked to "give back" by sharing what they've learned at their school, with the sports teams and clubs they participate in, and in the community where they live.

Cyber Range
The VBCPS Cyber Range is a virtual environment that allows students to explore various network and computer environments, practice skills, simulate cyber-attacks and learn to defend a digital infrastructure inside a virtual environment. Classes offer simulations, competitions and lab drills to teach students how to identify and penetrate vulnerabilities, properly secure web applications and build and test firewalls.

Leadership Workshop
This summer will mark the 47th year of the citywide Virginia Beach Leadership Workshop program. During the five-day, four-night workshop, students are involved in various activities including instructional classes, recreational sessions, group meetings, discussion groups assemblies. Additionally, student leaders explore issues of self-awareness and self-confidence, and are provided a foundation of knowledge from which to develop sound philosophies of leadership.

"These programs are just a sampling of the offerings in our division," said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "Each and every one is designed to provide the children of our city with the tools to be good citizens and to succeed at whatever calling they answer after graduation, be it college, a career or the military."

The full VSBA Showcases for Success directory is available at www.vsba.org/showcases. It includes division wide programs, as well as those at elementary, middle and high school levels. The focus of the 2020 VSBA Showcases for Success is The Profile of a Virginia Graduate, highlighting unique program offerings in Virginia's public schools.
