Music Education Program at Virginia Beach City Public Schools receives national recognition

For the 11th consecutive year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for outstanding commitment to music education.

"This award celebrates districts and schools that are working hard to assure that music education is part of a well-rounded education that is available to all students," said Mary Luehrsen, executive director of the NAMM Foundation, in her congratulatory message to the division. "We hope this news lifts teachers, parents, school administrators, community leaders and, most of all, students."

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, VBCPS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for the music programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Less than 5% of school districts across the nation earn this prestigious honor.

"As a division, we are committed to providing all students with a quality education in music and performing arts," said John Brewington, the division's fine arts coordinator. "The arts are rigorous and engaging subjects that provide students the opportunity to meet the expectations of Virginia's Profile of a Graduate and prepare them for new challenges in an ever-changing world. We are thankful for the music educators and community partners who make our work possible."

VBCPS employs 148 music teachers, providing instruction to students in all grades as early as pre-kindergarten.

The division also offers the Visual and Performing Arts Academy, where students involved in the music curriculum develop an understanding of music composition, theory and production and explore career possibilities in music education, music composition and music business.
