Compass to 2020: Charting The Course sets the vision and guides the work of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) for the next five years. This page will help visitors walk through the framework in its entirety as well as give updates as to how the school division is putting this framework into practice in classrooms, hallways and schools across the city.
Compass to 2020 charts the course for teaching and learning across the school division with the focus of ensuring that every student is challenged and supported to reach his or her full potential. The five-year strategic framework includes four goals – high academic expectations, multiple pathways, social-emotional development, and culture of growth and excellence – and multiple strategies to guide this important work.
The Teaching and Learning Framework drives our efforts inside the classroom to best prepare and challenge students. This framework includes four belief statements about our collective work as educators. The foundational pieces of effective instruction (planning, teaching, assessing and responding) are featured within the framework, leading to a safe, effective learning environment for every student, every day – a concept that is always at the center of our work. To learn more about the framework’s components, click through the interactive image to reveal additional information. The video library that follows highlights exemplary classroom practices related to the framework.
The work of Compass to 2020 points to a definitive objective of getting all students college and career ready. To that end, we have identified a set of attributes, referred to as our graduate profile, that we believe are critical for ensuring students are future ready. The graduate profile is intended to inspire, motivate, and guide the work of students, teachers, schools, and the division. Click on an attribute to learn more or click here for a printable version.
