Green Run's Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC), comprised of students from Green Run High School (GRHS) and Green Run Collegiate (GRC), won first place at the 2017 NJROTC Nationals Academic, Athletic and Drill Championship held April 7-8 in Pensacola, Florida. Green Run won the title by competing in academic, athletic and drill challenges against the nation's top 24 NJROTC units.

Led by retired Navy Cmdr. Curtis Brown and retired Marine Corps 1st Sgt. Felix Robles, Green Run's unit captured the championship trophy in addition to eight team trophies in the following categories: first place in armed exhibition drill; first place in overall drill; second place in athletics; second place in team situps; second place in armed platoon basic drill; third place in unarmed exhibition drill; fourth place in academics; and fourth place in team pushups.

Green Run cadets also earned individual honors for top-10 finishes in events. Zachary Horton, GRHS senior, earned fifth place male individual honors with 118 pushups as well as sixth place male individual honors with 321 situps. Also earning honors in situps were Austin Moore, GRHS senior, who took ninth place male individual honors with 319 situps, and Aminah Jones, GRC junior, who took ninth place female individual honors with 239 situps. Eric Alexander, GRHS senior, earned eighth place honors in academics which tests cadets' knowledge of maritime history, leadership, nautical science, naval knowledge, naval skills, ships, ranks, current events and protocols.

Green Run earned the right to compete at NJROTC nationals by winning the Area Five NJROTC Championship held in March. This is Green Run's fifth consecutive year to win Area Five, which is comprised of mid-Atlantic region schools from Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) offers NJROTC programs and naval science as an elective course at First Colonial, Green Run, Landstown, Princess Anne and Salem high schools.
