Virginia Beach school earns national
distinguished school award

Parkway Elementary School has been named a 2020-2021 National ESEA Distinguished School. Two schools from every state receive the award, which is presented by the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators. Parkway is being acknowledged for demonstrating exceptional student performance for two consecutive years.

"Even a global health pandemic cannot stop the educators at Parkway Elementary from meeting the educational, social and emotional needs of its students," said Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. "Under Principal Krista Barton-Arnold's leadership, Parkway thrives in both the face-to-face and virtual environments, keeping students engaged in their learning."

ESEA is an acronym for the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This award recognizes schools that are examples of superior, federally-funded school programs. These schools demonstrate a wide array of strengths, including team approaches to teaching and learning, focused professional development opportunities for staff, individualized programs for student success and strong partnerships between the school, parents and community, according to the organization.

"This is, truly, a village effort and honor," said Principal Barton-Arnold. "Our entire community is dedicated to a high-quality education of each and every student at Parkway. There is no mountain high enough, no barrier too large to overcome. The teachers and staff at Parkway find a way to get the job done."

This is the second year in a row for a VBCPS school to earn this honor. Rosemont Elementary School was a 2019-2020 National ESEA Distinguished School.

Parkway will be recognized with other nationwide honorees at the during the virtual National ESEA Conference scheduled for February 8-11, 2021.
