Virginia Beach school receives national recognition for closing learning gaps

Windsor Oaks Elementary School has been named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing.

"This is an extraordinary success, accomplished during extraordinary times," said Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. "I encourage the Windsor Oaks community to join me in congratulating teachers, staff, students and their families on this prestigious honor and their commitment to creating safe and welcoming schools where young learners master challenging content."

Windsor Oaks was nominated by the Virginia Department of Education for this award based on data that reflected the school's dedication to closing achievement gaps for students with disabilities and African American students. The school is proud to focus on the needs of every child and every teacher, encouraging families to be partners in student success. These strategies were maintained during the COVID-19 school closures and implemented virtually on various digital platforms when necessary.

Established in 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing achievement gaps.

"This year's cohort of honorees demonstrates what is possible when committed educators and school leaders create vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school cultures where rich teaching and learning can flourish," said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in an announcement this morning. "Blue Ribbon Schools have so much to offer and can serve as a model for other schools and communities so that we can truly build back better."

Windsor Oaks is one of seven schools in Virginia to be named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Other division schools that previously received this award are Tallwood Elementary School (2019), Great Neck Middle School (2015) and Hermitage Elementary School (2014).

The National Blue Ribbon School award will be officially presented to Windsor Oaks during a November ceremony in Washington, D.C.
