Music education program in Virginia Beach schools receives national recognition

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored for the 13th consecutive year as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation, recognizing the division for outstanding commitment to music education. VBCPS is in the top 5% of districts across the nation to receive this prestigious award.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify, VBCPS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for the music programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Music and the arts are a critical component of the core curriculum at VBCPS schools. "Strong community support and involvement in the arts helps build a stronger foundation for student success in those areas of study and beyond," said Performing Arts Coordinator John H. Brewington. "The benefits of a strong music program extend far beyond the program itself; the primary benefit will always be the incomparable joy that good music brings to peoples' lives. This recognition is largely due to the support and commitment of the district's music educators."

Research into music education continues to demonstrate the educational and cognitive benefits for children who make music. This research indicates that everyday listening skills are stronger in children with music training than in those without. Some of the social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills and managing constructive criticism.

"Along with contributing to improved graduation rates and academic success, students in quality music programs are consistently more proficient in other subjects and develop important life skills," Brewington noted. "We have noticed how the most involved music students are also exceptional critical thinkers and good listeners, and exhibit persistence through adversity."

This award also acknowledges that VBCPS is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which recommends music and the arts as crucial elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

VBCPS employs 133 music teachers, providing instruction to students in grades K-12.

The division also offers the Visual and Performing Arts Academy, where students involved in the music curriculum develop an understanding of music composition, theory and production and explore career possibilities in music education, music composition and music business.
