Virginia Beach high schools to compete in interscholastic lacrosse for first time this spring

For the very first time, Virginia Beach high schools will be playing lacrosse interscholastically starting this spring. With the Beach District season recently underway, each high school is fielding a varsity boys and a varsity girls team. On Tuesday, March 28, Kempsville and Ocean Lakes will play in a girls/boys doubleheader at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex (2044 Landstown Centre Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.) The Beach District schedule for all VBCPS schools begins on April 4.

"We are very excited to finally be able to provide this new opportunity for our student athletes to engage in competitive sport," said Student Activities Coordinator David Rhodes. "Playing lacrosse, like all sports, not only develops athletic skills, but also instills valuable life lessons in teamwork, leadership, and perseverance, setting up young athletes for success both on and off the field."

Some Virginia Beach high schools have had club lacrosse programs for years. Other schools are new to offering the sport in any capacity. Each school is allowed to schedule as many as 14 games per Virginia High School League (VHSL) rules. Region playoffs start on May 19, and a state champion is scheduled to be crowned for boys and girls on June 10.
