VBCPS features “The Art of Being a Military Child” exhibit at Lynnhaven Mall

Throughout April, the Month of the Military Child, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) student artwork will be featured at Lynnhaven Mall. Now in its 11th year, "The Art of Being a Military Child" showcases students' artistic interpretations of what it means to be a military dependent, including deployments, transitions, patriotism, family and school. It is the culmination of a contest open to all VBCPS students to which more than 700 art entries were submitted.

The exhibit opens at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, with a reception in Lynnhaven Mall's center court, including entertainment by the Princess Anne High School Band. VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence, First Lady of Virginia Suzanne Youngkin, senior leaders from each branch of military service and other dignitaries will be present to recognize contest participants and award winners in a ceremony from 6-7 p.m.

"With approximately 12,000 military-connected students in our school division whose families support some of the most important military functions in the world, the Month of the Military Child holds special meaning for us," Spence said. "Our students share their unique stories through their art, so I invite everyone to see this exhibit and connect with families who play a vital role in our community, nation and world. I'm especially thrilled this event is returning in-person for the first time since the pandemic."

The school division hosts the contest and annual art show in partnership with Lynnhaven Mall and military school liaison officers at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story and Naval Air Station Oceana-Dam Neck.
