2023-24 federal grant information presented to Virginia Beach School Board

The Virginia Beach School Board received information about proposed federal grant applications at its May 9 meeting. For the 2023-24 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $16.3 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

Grant applications will be submitted for the following programs:

  • Title I, Part A - Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged: Improving Basic Programs Operated by Local Educational Agencies (LEA).
  • Title I, Part D - Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged: Prevention and Intervention Programs for Children and Youth Who are Neglected, Delinquent or At-Risk.
  • Title II, Part A - Preparing, Training, and Recruiting High Quality Teachers and Principals: Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting Fund.
  • Title III, Part A - Language Instruction for English Learners and Immigrant Students.
  • Title IV, Part A - Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants.

VBCPS applies annually for ESEA grant funding as authorized under ESSA. These funds exist to strengthen and support local divisions in their efforts to improve the quality of education for elementary and secondary students, while following the direction of statewide standards.

In addition, through guidelines, instructions and assurances from the Virginia Department of Education, local school divisions must verify usage of grant funding and remain in full compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and statutes. Each school division must agree to implement all assurances for each of the programs and certify that it is authorized by its superintendent and school board to file the application.

For more information about the division's federal grants programs, please contact the Department of Teaching and Learning at 757-263-1070 or [email protected].
